Our governance structure

Our governance structure is designed to ensure robust oversight and strategic direction. Our Board of Trustees, along with various committees, panels and colleges, plays a valued and pivotal role in guiding our work and achieving our mission.

Board composition and meetings

Our Board meets quarterly and is made up of 16 dedicated members. This includes our Chair, 4 members elected through a system of electoral colleges, and 4 members nominated by Professional Engineering Institutions:

Additionally, the Chair of the Engineering Council and up to 6 members appointed by the Board contribute their expertise and insights.

Term limits and commitment

Each Board member can serve for a maximum of 8 years, divided into 2 terms of 4 years. This structure ensures a balance of continuity and fresh perspectives, fostering dynamic and effective governance. The diverse and experienced individuals on our Board, steer the organisation towards achieving its goals.

Electoral colleges

We have 2 electoral colleges that nominate individuals for appointment to the EngineeringUK Board. The Professional Engineering College consists of representatives from the Professional Engineering Institutions, while the Business and Industry College includes representatives from companies and businesses that are EngineeringUK Corporate Members. These colleges ensure wider stakeholder representation and that our Board benefits from a diverse range of perspectives and expertise, enhancing our governance and strategic decision-making.

Business and Industry Panel

Our Business and Industry (B&I) Panel is drawn from our Corporate Members, some of the UK’s most influential companies. Meeting quarterly, the B&I Panel plays a crucial role in shaping and driving EngineeringUK’s agenda. This panel provides a significant platform for industry leaders to collaborate on addressing the skills challenges facing the UK, ensuring that our initiatives are aligned with the needs of the business community.

Professional Engineering Committee

The Professional Engineering Committee (PEC) is where the professional engineering community comes together to develop and implement coordinated policies and programmes, and to share best practice. This forum includes all PEIs, EngineeringUK, the Engineering Council and the Royal Academy of Engineering. The PEC is a collaborative space for discussing and agreeing on issues of mutual interest, and it acts as the collective voice of the profession to the government, delivering unified messages across all engineering disciplines.
