EngineeringUK statement on government's apprenticeship overhaul
Our Fit for the future report published in collaboration with Lord Willetts and Lord Knight, made a number of recommendations aimed at refocusing the apprenticeship system.
Our Fit for the future report (October 2023) published in collaboration with Lord Willetts and Lord Knight, made a number of recommendations aimed at refocusing the apprenticeship system towards younger people to close some of the skills gaps in the engineering and technology sectors.
In light of this we are delighted by the announcement that the government will be investing in growing the opportunities for young people to develop entry level skills including through new foundation apprenticeships.
EngineeringUK's Head of Policy, Beatrice Barleon comments:
"We need hundreds of thousands more people in engineering and technology. At the same time, Level 2 apprenticeships in engineering have almost halved in the last decade.
The success of the government’s missions to make Britain a clean energy superpower and kickstart economic growth depends on the engineering and technology workforce. This investment in young people will also help with the mission to break down the barriers to opportunity.
We look forward to working with the government and Skills England on ensuring that future workforce needs are met."
