National Grid's job is to connect people to the energy they use. From the warmth and light we rely on at home, and the power which keeps our factories and offices going, to the infrastructure that is essential to our modern lifestyle.

National Grid owns and manages the grids to which many different energy sources are connected. In Britain we run systems that deliver gas and electricity across the entire country. In the North Eastern US, we provide power directly to millions of customers. We hold a vital position at the centre of the energy system.

That puts National Grid at the heart of one of the greatest challenges facing our society; the creation of new sustainable energy solutions and the development of an energy system that can underpin our economic prosperity in the 21st century.

 

Which areas will you be focusing recruitment on over the next five years?

We expect to recruit staff across a range of disciplines and at all levels over the next 10 years. We need new staff partly to replace retirements, but mainly to enable us to invest in new energy infrastructure to replace ageing assets and to facilitate low carbon energy.

We need staff to design, project manage, commission, operate and maintain and we have training schemes at apprentice, foundation degree and graduate level, as well as hiring more experienced employees. We expect to increase numbers through all these routes.

Engineering UK provides valuable data and analysis of the education and skills system and their annual report is a key reference source. Engineering UK also provides opportunities to meet others working on similar issues to exchange views and to collaborate on matters affecting the engineering sector.
