Four of the UK’s leading engineering bodies have come to together to host virtual fringe events at this year’s Labour and Conservative party conferences. The events take place ahead of the Government’s 2020 Comprehensive Spending Review, which is being billed as one of the most important in a generation.
Entitled Engineering Priorities for the Spending Review, the events are hosted as part of the National Engineering Policy Centre in partnership with EngineeringUK, the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Engineering and Technology and the Royal Academy of Engineering.
The events will outline the engineering priorities for the upcoming Government Comprehensive Spending Review, which is expected in the autumn. They will propose actions to enable the UK to make investment decisions that will create more jobs and prosperity, as well as meeting the future needs of our society in a way that is faster, more efficient and sustainable.
Bridget Phillipson MP, Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury has been confirmed to attend the Labour fringe event. She will be joined by Blessing Danha MEng (Hons) CEng MICE, Member of the ICE council, and Manager (Major Projects Advisory), KPMG, Dr Simon Harrison BSc PhD CEng FIET, Vice President, Institution of Engineering and Technology, Dr Hilary Leevers, Chief Executive, EngineeringUK and Faith Wainwright FREng, Royal Academy of Engineering. Chairing the event will be Georgina Bailey, Policy Editor, The House magazine.
The events coincide with a new National Engineering Policy Centre document, entitled Engineering a resilient and sustainable future, which will be published on Wednesday 30 September.
The document offers a range of suggested concrete actions in four areas, grouped under Net zero, Education and Skills, Infrastructure and Innovation, but with many interdependencies and overlaps between them. The document sets out how they especially support two priorities of the Spending Review - Economic Recovery – prioritising jobs & skills and Levelling-up by investing in infrastructure and innovation.
