How we conduct research

Our research

Everything we do is grounded in evidence. For more than 20 years we’ve examined the sector's workforce composition and impact, as well as educational pathways and future skills demands. We also ask young people, parents and teachers about their view of STEM careers. Our research and analysis support workforce planning and policy development. They are shared widely with government, media, educational institutions and the engineering community.

Methodology

We use a variety of methods to conduct research. The methodology varies depending on the piece of research and we outline our approach in our reports and outputs. We conduct primary research, including through online surveys supported by online services such as Teacher Tapp and YouGov. We also use focus groups, interviews and observations.

We do secondary research and secondary analysis of available datasets, developing unique, industry specific reports. These datasets include educational pathways datasets produced by national education departments across the UK and schools census data. We access and analyse HESA student and graduate outcome datasets and labour force survey data via the UK Data Service. And our team are ONS accredited researchers.

Who we work with

While much of our research is done by our in-house team, we also commission research and work in partnership with other organisations. Most recently we have partnered with Engineering Council, Make UK, Royal Academy of Engineering and the Royal Society. Additionally, have commissioned work from Lightcast, Schoolzone, Verian and YouGov.
