Overview
The Big Bang at School programme helps schools bring an exciting and inspiring STEM event right to their own doorstep. These events give students the chance to explore the wide range of STEM careers and take part in hands-on activities and workshops.
Our evaluation found that the events were engaging and accessible for students of all abilities. This is especially encouraging, as the programme is designed to be flexible – allowing each school to create an event that works for their students and their community.
One in three students said that attending a Big Bang at School event made them want to learn more about STEM careers and get involved in more STEM activities. The events also helped teachers feel more motivated and confident to speak to students about STEM careers. These results highlight the positive impact of bringing an inspiring STEM experience directly into the school environment.

Key findings
Our evaluation showed that the Big Bang at School events:
- Were enjoyed by most students (63%) and engaging (as rated by 94% of teachers)
- Motivated 1 in 3 students to do more STEM activities (32%) and find out more about STEM jobs (31%)
- Made 28% of students more interested in a STEM job in the future, and more confident to pursue these
- Build teachers’ confidence (76%) and motivation (82%) to speak to students about STEM careers
Bringing STEM experiences directly into schools helps spark curiosity and broaden horizons for students who might not otherwise have these opportunities. It’s an important piece of the wider picture in supporting young people to explore their potential in STEM.
