Overview
Energy Quest is a curriculum-linked workshop for students aged 11 to 13, developed by EngineeringUK and funded by Shell. It is designed to help young people learn about the role of sustainable energy and renewable technologies in engineering, and to encourage them to consider engineering careers as an option.
CFE Research, has been independently evaluating Energy Quest over the past 3 years, exploring changes in the impact students perceive across different iterations of the content. Their report presents the findings from over 1,200 students and nearly 100 teachers who completed a survey after taking part in an Energy Quest workshop. This is the final year of CFE’s process and impact evaluation, considering the effectiveness of the revised Energy Quest content 3.

Key findings
- The practical activities are perceived to be the most interesting and most engaging element. Students welcome the opportunity to choose their practical activities. Teachers recognise the content’s links to the national curriculum as well as its role in highlighting the diversity of careers in engineering
- Nearly two thirds (65%) of students agree that the workshop is enjoyable. Enjoyment along with participation in STEM activities outside of school and studying three or more STEM subjects are consistently associated with positive perceptions of EQ. In contrast, student demographics are not consistently associated with perceptions of EQ, implying that the workshop may be effectively engaging students of all backgrounds.
