Young people’s experiences and attitudes
It's important for us to understand what young people think about a possible career in science, engineering and technology. Our research looks at how they experience STEM in school and where they get careers information and advice. We analyse young people’s views on careers in the industry as well as those of teachers and parents.
What do young people think?
We partnered with the Royal Society on the Science Education Tracker 2023 to track young people’s experiences of and attitudes towards STEM education and careers. The 2023 survey included questions about engineering for the first time. Prior to this we have run the annual Engineering Brand Monitor (EBM) to understand perceptions, understanding and aspirations to pursue engineering as a career.

Parents significantly influence their children’s career interests, especially in engineering. Our research shows a strong link between parental knowledge and children’s interest in engineering and tech careers. However, many parents lack confidence and knowledge about these careers, highlighting the need for better information for both parents and young people.

What do teachers think?
STEM teachers are crucial in inspiring future engineering and tech professionals. Our research finds that teachers are generally knowledgeable and confident about STEM careers. Many teachers don’t incorporate this knowledge into their lessons or regularly conduct STEM activities. So, it’s important that teachers are motivated to encourage their students to explore engineering and tech as an inclusive and desirable career.
