Exam results 2024

These briefings cover entries and attainment for STEM subjects at A level and Scottish Advanced Highers, and engineering and technology-related T levels for the for the 2024 exam series. This is the first year where all UK nations have returned completely to pre-pandemic conditions, with Scotland now back to including full coursework assessment.

 

A level

  • Maths remains the most common A level, surpassing 100,000 entries for the first time.
  • The proportion of entries for maths, further maths, computing, and physics have all increased since 2023.
  • Female students remain underrepresented in maths (37%), D&T (32%), further maths (27%), physics (23%), and computing (17%).

T levels

  • T levels continue to grow in popularity with the introduction of new courses, with numbers more than doubling to 7,380 across all T levels, and 3,598 across engineering and tech-related courses.
  • Just under half of all young people who completed their T Level course studied an engineering and tech-related course.
  • Only 9% of those completing engineering and tech-related courses were female.

GCSE

  • Computing GCSE continues to grow, up 5.8% since 2023, with much of this driven by a 10.3% increase in female entries.
  • Male students continue to be more likely than female students to take optional STEM subjects at GCSE.
  • Although entries for female students in Computing, D&T, Construction, and Engineering are lower than male students, their attainment levels are higher.
