The power of volunteering

Young people interact with exhibits and stands and activities at The Big Bang Fair

Volunteers inspire the next generation into STEM careers

Volunteers bring our programmes to life. They play a crucial role in helping young people explore STEM careers. From telling their story or judging student projects to delivering hands-on activities, our volunteers ignite curiosity and develop interest in science, tech, engineering and maths. We believe that direct engagement gives young people real-world connections to STEM, fuels their aspirations and broadens their understanding of what they could achieve.

Benefits of volunteering

Volunteering offers a chance to build on valuable skills such as leadership, communication, and professional expertise – all while supporting the next generation into engineering and tech careers. It's an excellent way to meet new people and engage in something outside the daily routine.

For young people, interacting with STEM role models brings potential STEM careers to life. Research shows it enhances their understanding and excitement for STEM subjects.

As a child, I came to The Big Bang Fair myself, and that inspired me to pursue STEM.

STEM Ambassadors

Bring STEM careers to life for young people as a STEM Ambassador. Run by STEM Learning, STEM Ambassadors are volunteers from across the UK working in science, engineering and tech. They're role models for students, showing anyone can work in STEM. They volunteer at events and schools all over the UK, including at The Big Bang Fair.

Climate Ambassadors

Help support schools start or develop a climate action plan and inspire students with careers in environmental sustainability. Climate Ambassadors are volunteers from lots of different backgrounds and jobs in STEM. They work with schools to inspire students about the skills they’ll need for a greener future. Climate Ambassadors can also support senior leadership teams in schools to meet net zero targets.
