The ninth Tomorrow’s Engineers Week returns this year from 8 to 12 November 2021.
The 2021 edition of the Week coincides with the COP26 Climate Summit in Glasgow. This has given #TEWeek21 the opportunity to look at how young engineers and engineering can contribute to tackling climate change.
The Week will feature a unique ‘Schools COP’ where students around the country are invited to discuss the vital importance of achieving net zero and cutting carbon emissions.
Inspiring the future generation of engineers
Tomorrow’s Engineers Week is a celebration of engineering designed to highlight to young people that engineering is a creative, problem solving, exciting career that improves the world around us.
Engineering institutions, employers and schools will have the opportunity to come together to deliver inspiring activity and invite young people to discuss solutions to the climate crisis.
The event will also explore how the engineers behind technological and scientific breakthroughs will be at the heart of the world’s response to climate change in the coming years.
How to get involved
The first stage of the ‘Schools COP’ will be a Summit on 13 October. Schools and youth groups can nominate young people to be a climate change ambassador. To take part, get in touch.
Around 50 young people will become climate change ambassadors and take part in the 30-minute ‘Schools COP’ Summit, where they will discuss some of the key topics world leaders will be discussing at the UN Climate Change Summit, such as:
- How to get young people involved in the climate debate
- How engineering, science and innovation can help achieve net zero
- What changes young people would like to see in nature, cities and the built environment
- The impact of climate change on young people, their hopes and fears for the future
The ‘Schools COP’ Summit will then be broadcast on Monday 8 November for all schools across the UK to take part in. Our lesson plans and supporting information will be available to give students the opportunity to learn more about engineering and the positive impact that it can have on the climate emergency.
Schools are then invited to vote on the ideas put forward and submit their students’ own suggestions about how we can tackle the issues due to be discussed at the #COP26 Climate Summit in Glasgow.
