Winners of national Robotics Challenge competition announced at The Big Bang Fair

Students from Farnborough Hill in Hampshire have been announced as the UK winners of the EEP Robotics Challenge.

The winning team competed against hundreds of other students across the country to compete for the top prize. Student teams from Ballymena Academy, Oak Lodge School for the Deaf, The West Bridgford school and Nonsuch School for Girls were Highly Commended. Teams from Mercia School in Sheffield and Calderstone’s School in Liverpool also won awards from the judges in categories of robot design and for speed and control respectively.    

The student teams completed a series of missions to discover what engineers can do to create a cleaner, more sustainable world. They learnt to build a variety of LEGO® Robotics kits and program it to complete a speed and control test and perform a set of environmentally themed tasks such as planting a tree.

Naomi Gilmour, Head of Engagement Projects at EngineeringUK, said: “The Robotics Challenge is a brilliant experience for young people of all backgrounds to get a chance to explore the variety, excitement and opportunity presented by a career in engineering.

“I am delighted that the EEP Robotics Challenge has returned to The Big Bang Fair because face-to-face STEM activities are so important for young people. We have been extremely impressed by the commitment students have shown and I congratulate all of the teams who have progressed at regional levels. A huge well done to the overall winners of the EEP Robotics Challenge finals from Farnborough Hill.”

The EEP Robotics Challenge introduces student teams to real-world engineering through technology, robotics and computing tasks. The engagement programme aims to help students put their school learning into context and discover exciting new careers.

This year’s challenge returned to The Big Bang Fair after a 2 year hiatus. We were thrilled to see so many young people enter the doors of The Fair and take part in the finals of the Robotics Challenge.
